Avenir Energy’s Director of Accounting is responsible for balance sheet integrity, and maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of all assets, liabilities, and equity. The Director of Accounting will partner with senior leadership to support decision-making, manage risk, and enhance profitability in a high-volume, asset-intensive, and highly regulated industry.   

  

Key Responsibilities 

Financial Leadership & Strategy 

  • Direct and oversee the accounting department, including accounts payable, general ledger and tax functions. 

  • Provide accurate and timely financial reporting to senior management and external stakeholders. 

  • Support strategic decision-making through analysis of profitability, cash flow, and financial forecasts. 

  • Ensure alignment of accounting practices with the company’s strategic and operational goals. 

  • Developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures to ensure efficiency and consistency in financial operations. 

  

Compliance, Audit, and Risk Management 

  • Coordinate monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring compliance with IFRS. 

  • Reconciling cash accounts with bank statements to ensure accuracy, identify discrepancies, and resolve any issues in a timely manner. 

  • Together with our outsourced tax expert, ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal tax regulations. Preparing and filing tax returns and coordinating with external auditors and tax consultants. 

  

Technology & Process Improvement 

  • Oversee financial systems (ERP, fuel management/accounting software, dispatch and logistics systems) to ensure integration and accuracy. 

  • Drive automation and process improvements in financial reporting and compliance functions. 

  

Leadership & Team Development 

  • Manage and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. 

  • Establish clear performance goals and provide professional development opportunities. 

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, HR, IT and sales to support the business with accurate financial insights. 

  

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration 

  • 8+ years of experience in progressive finance leadership roles 

  • 2+ years leadership experience 

  • CPA Designation 

  • Strong communications, technology, analytical and management skills 

  • Knowledge of NetSuite and/or IFRS 

  • Knowledge of Canadian tax and reporting compliance

  • Bilingual English/French speaking is an asset
